Potash + Hedgehog 6.28.2014

Did some redlining today with Summerset hiking Mt. Potash Trail to the summit (an out-and-back), and then doing the UNH Trail Loop over the summit of Mt. Hedgehog. The trail was mostly dry, and the weather was warm (70’s, approaching 80 as the day wore on), and somewhat humid. Lots of mosquitoes at lower elevation.

Overall, the hike had more elevation gain than I was really counting on. That plus there were sections that were quite rough, rocky, and rooty. Just a little more effort required than I was expecting for the 8.6 miles.

Nice views, mostly to the Sandwich Range. Passaconaway dominated much of the scene, but Chocorua to the east was the most interesting peak to view from my perspective.

Challenging stream crossing not too far from the Mt. Potash trailhead. Summerset managed to not get her feet wet.

Ascending Mt. Potash Trail. Lots of roots everywhere!

Panorama from summit of Mt. Potash looking roughly northwest. Carrigain is the distant bump off to the right.

Conifers doing what they do on the Potash summit.

From the summit of Mt. Potash. Not quite sure what those flowers are, but they are pretty. I’ll find a guidebook and look them up.

Mt. Chocorua from the ledges on the side of Mt. Hedgehog.

Huge boulders spotted (not that you could miss them) descending the UNH Loop Trail down Mt. Hedgehog.
